Dr. Virginia Apgar made this viola with a maple shelf swiped from a phone booth on the campus of the College of Physicians and Surgeons. The well-aged wood was ideal for the back of the instrument. It could be carved into the thin curved form needed to enhance resonance and accommodate the tension created by the strings.
